Septic tanks require preventative maintenance like any other complex network to ensure optimum performance year round. August is an excellent time of year to deal with any maintenance tasks. Some tasks should be done more frequently than others. Sticking to a preventative maintenance routine keeps your system healthy and strong, and helps prevent expensive repairs or replacements.

Here are some tips to keep your tank in great condition:

Day-to-Day Septic Tank Maintenance

The choices you make each day directly affect the health of your septic system. You should avoid:

  • Putting items down the sink or toilet that can cause clogs like coffee grounds, baby wipes, and greasy or fatty food.
  • Using a lot of water at once. Try to stagger the use of appliances.
  • Placing heavy items or machinery on or near your drainfield.
  • Sending harmful household chemicals down the drain that can destroy the good bacteria needed in your tank to help break down waste

Septic Tank Inspection

If you haven’t had a professional look at your septic system for some time, or you think there might be an issue, consider calling for an inspection. Inspections can highlight glitches in the system before they become a bigger problem. During an inspection, we investigate various areas of the system looking for any signs of leakage, backups, damage to the tank or pipes, drainfield failure, and more.

Septic Tank Pumping

We recommend having your septic tank pumped every 2-3 years to keep it working efficiently. In August, the ground is normally dry, and that enables us to back up closer to tanks that may be in the back part of your property that would typically require a lot of hose laid if we had to get to it during a wet time of year. This time of year we can back in somewhere without making ruts in the yard.
