‘Tis the season for septic tank problems!

When your family members and friends visit during the holiday season your water use increases. Sometimes overuse leads to septic issues – and no one wants those on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day!

But don’t worry, your holiday season doesn’t have to be interrupted by unwanted sewage backups or drain field failure. Here are five tips to keep everything running smoothly.

1. Get Your Septic Tank Pumped

One of the best preventive measures you can take to save your septic system before a big event is to get it pumped, especially if it has been awhile since your last service visit.

Many of our customers find this method is the safest bet. We are happy to visit before the holidays to keep your season merry & bright. Contact us to set up an appointment.

2. Rent a Portable Restroom

Depending on the capacity of your septic tank and the number of guests expected, you may want to consider renting a portable restroom.

If your system is trying to process extreme amounts of water, it can cause some nasty issues like system flooding. This creates backups and reduces the amount of time your system has to treat sewage.

3. Let your Septic System Rest

Plan ahead by using less water and/or staggering water use a few days before your event. Try not to run your dishwasher, do multiple loads of laundry, or take extra showers.

4. Prep Your Food Before the Big Day

Try to complete any food prep or cooking that requires a lot of water before your event to reduce extra water use. While you’re at it, make sure food items like potato peels, eggshells, and other solid foods are tossed in the trash instead of down the garbage disposal.

5. Provide Some Direction

Put up a friendly note asking guests to avoid flushing any items besides toilet paper.

Using these tips will certainly help your septic system this holiday season.
